Backdrafting is dangerous because exhaust gas contains carbon monoxide. When a water heater backdrafts, the combustion process changes, and the water heater may start generating high levels of carbon monoxide.
Clues that could indicate your water heater has a drafting issue:
Melted plastic at the draft hood
Corrosion at the top of the tank
Moisture at the top of the tank
Excessive condensation on cold water pipes in area of water heater
Back pitched vent connector
